If you would like to change your status from a student permit or work permit or even extend you visitor’s visa you should always apply at least 30 days before the expiration of your current permit.
To find the date in your visitor’s visa you can check on your passport. If you don’t have a stamp which could happen its expiration is 6 months from issue.
If you apply to extend your visa or change of status from work or study permit once the date on your current status has expired you are now on implied status and you are still legally in Canada until a decision has been issued on your application.
You should also be aware that your visa is for your time in Canada. If you chose to leave Canada and visit another country you will need to meet all the requirements to re-enter Canada again and need a new visa. A single use visa is just that, one entry into Canada.
