Canada offers many opportunities for study for international students. From graduate to undergraduate degrees, Master’s program and PhD’s.

Educational programs may or may not require you to have a study permit. Let me explain
If you come to Canada for a short study of under 6 months in length you do not require a study permit. Meaning if you chose to come to Canada as a visitor and while you are here you chose to go to school as long as the program is completed within the length of time your visa is valid you do not need a study permit.
However, if you chose to extend your program beyond the 6 months or length of your visa you must apply for a study permit. This would be for people who chose for example to take a language course like improve their English. Most of these courses can be completed within the 6-month time frame.
If you decide you wish to extend you must apply for a change of circumstances and apply for a new study permit.
Your field of study in Canada will also decide on how long your PGWP will be. If you chose to school for a 1-year study you will be able to apply for a 1-year post grad work permit.
However, if you chose to study for 1 ½ years or more you will be able to apply for a 3-year post grad work permit.
Your studies can be in Universities, College, trade programs. What is the difference?
Most university programs are professional programs and usually are NOC 0, A or B occupations
Colleges are usually support programs and trade programs which are NOC B, and C but not always the case.
If you chose to study in Canada you should know that Canada has DLI’s (Designated Learning Institutes) from the far eastern part of Canada to the far west and to the far north.
Canada has every field of study you can imagine and you should consider what your plan or objective is long term when you are applying to come to Canada to study under a study work permit.
If you plan is to come to Canada, study and return home, where you take you studies will not be as important as if you plan on staying and planning on making Canada your home.
If this is the case you should consider some of the following details of the program and where you take this program.
How easy is it to get my Permanent resident from this study program in this province?
What is the job outlook in my field of study in this program?
If I study in the province will it be more beneficial to study in another province because of cost of living?
If is chose to study in this educational program will I be able to apply for a PNP in this province or in another province?
These are very important questions because if you chose to study in a province and realize your job or immigration possibilities are not the strongest and may not find a job in your studies you may need to move to another province and some provinces you will have points removed for educating outside of the province.
You must also consider if you wish to have you spouse or children come to Canada with you. Your spouse can get an open work permit and work while you study but did you know that if you are legally here studying in Canada your children can attend an educational program in schools that are secondary and below for no cost.
Canada believes all children have the right to an education and it is a part of our society. You must note that some studies you chose may not allow your children to attend school free of charge but this is something you must investigate before you arrive.
