Provincial Attestation Letters (PALs) are now available for international student applicants in BC and Alberta

As of March 4, 2024, the government of British Columbia has initiated the issuance of Provincial Attestation Letters (PALs) directly to eligible postsecondary institutions.

These PALs are essential for new international student applicants seeking to apply for a study permit in the province.

Following the January 22, 2024 announcement by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) mandating the attachment of a PAL with study permit applications, the PAL issuing process in B.C. is now fully operational.

Reports indicate that Alberta has also commenced the issuance of PALs to international students. A noteworthy aspect of this mechanism is that institutions are actively obtaining PALs for their international students.

For prospective international students planning to pursue studies in British Columbia or Alberta, contacting their respective institutions will provide additional information regarding the PAL application process.

Immigration, while debated, fuels Canada’s economic growth

Immigration catalyzes Canada's economic growth, though its long-term viability is subject to debate.

According to Northern Trust, a notable surge in newcomers was observed in 2022, contributing to Canada's unprecedented population growth.

This influx, totalling 437,180 immigrants and 607,782 non-permanent residents, has invigorated the healthcare, IT, and construction sectors.

However, Ottawa's strategy has raised eyebrows, reflected in the Trudeau administration's imposition of caps on study permits and a noticeable shift in public sentiment fueled by concerns over strain on public services and housing.

In response to Canada's ageing demographic, some advocate for a more robust immigration initiative.

BC PNP delays the new Pearson Language Test acceptance

Despite the Pearson Test of English (PTE Core) being approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for Canada work and visa applications (except the Student Direct Stream), it has not yet been accepted by the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).

From February 12, PTE Core tests can be taken for economic immigration through the federal Express Entry-related programs., alongside CELPIP and IELTS tests.

BC PNP plans to accept PTE Core in the fall of 2024. The BC PNP currently accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, Test d’evaluation de francais (TEF), and Test de connaissance du francais (TCF).

Canada released updated travel information for Mexicans

On February 29, 2024, the Canadian Government updated travel requirements for Mexican citizens to enhance ties and uphold immigration integrity.

Mexican citizens with valid US non-immigrant visas or past Canadian visas can now apply for an eTA, which allows most to travel without a visa.

Those who do not fulfill these will need to obtain a visitor visa.

This measure is intended to efficiently manage asylum claims while ensuring the mobility of Mexican citizens. The processes for work or study permits remain the same.

Canada consistently reviews visa policies and asylum claim patterns to safeguard the integrity of its asylum and immigration systems.
